The medium is the message

Today in class we are talking about youtube, more specifically how the videos are not the message that is being conveyed but rather the channel itself, youtube, is the message. Youtube is an ever evolving source of information due to viewer comments, ratings, subscriptions, etc. and the constant stream of new content being uploaded. I think this is a relevant connection but I don't think it is the main point. Yes viewer interaction changes the mind of the content creator and by extension the message or video however I think that most including myself are staring past the giant sign staring us in the face. Using youtube verses watching tv or even using a different video site it is vastly different. With television you have to schedule your time to watch it at a specific time where youtube it becomes what you want on your time. A different video hosting site would have much more subtle differences from youtube than television but it still is a different message. It is interesting to watch as we as a culture grow and our mediums grow and evolve our messages change even when it is the same content.
